Banking That Gives Back

At SCCU, we believe that banking should do more than serve financial needs it should serve the greater good.

As a customer-owned bank rooted in the Northern Rivers, we’re here to create meaningful change in the communities we live and work in.

From helping protect the natural places we love, to backing grassroots organisations that uplift our region, every dollar you bank with us helps fuel a better future for people and the planet.

SCCU’s history of giving back

For more than 50 years, Southern Cross Credit Union has been part of what makes our region strong – community.

From small local clubs to major recovery efforts, we’ve proudly championed community projects spanning generations that protect our environment, nurture young people, and bring locals together.

Whether it’s funding wildlife rescue, empowering volunteers, or backing grassroots events, our commitment has always been the same: to help our communities thrive, together.

SCCU's community support

Here for our community

Over the years, Southern Cross Credit Union has proudly supported a wide range of local organisations, projects and events that strengthen our region.

Here are just a few:

  • WardellCORE – helping flood-affected communities rebuild and grow through local garden and resilience programs.
  • Surf for Sanity – supporting mental health and wellbeing through ocean-based programs that connect people with community and the sea.
  • Australian Seabird & Turtle Rescue – funding facilities and education initiatives protecting coastal wildlife.
  • Quiet Courage Foundation – supporting people affected by cancer through care packages and community programs.
  • Plastic for Change – funding recycling equipment to reduce local plastic waste and create circular solutions.
  • Cabarita Beach Surf Life Saving Club – backing patrol training and community safety programs.
  • Pottsville Beach Community Hall – helping improve local facilities that bring people together.
  • Murwillumbah Sporting Car Club – supporting youth driver education and safety initiatives.
  • Community clean-ups & coast-care – partnering with local groups like Positive Change for Marine Life to protect our coastline and waterways.
  • Local festivals & sporting events – from the Ballina Food & Wine Festival to Hockey Tweed, fostering connection through community events.

Together, these projects reflect a simple truth – community thrives when we support one another.

“We value the relationship with SCCU now spanning over a 10 year period.

We look forward to keeping the local Kingscliff beaches safe for locals & visitors to enjoy again for the Summer” – Mark Humphries, Cudgen Headland SLSC

Looking for Support?

If you’re part of a grassroots organisation, community initiative, or local cause doing great things we’d love to hear about it. Whether you’re raising awareness, running events, or just need help getting the word out, we’re happy to have a chat and learn more.

While we work within set funding periods, we’re always open to new ideas and opportunities. If there’s a way we can get involved financially, through awareness, or hands-on support let’s start the conversation.

Tell Us About Your Project Previous Community Grants
We are so grateful to have a strong partnership with such a great company that really cares about its local environment – and lives up to the community custodianship we hope to share with our partners and supporters.

Winning the $1,500 award from Southern Cross Credit Union’s Community Goals program will be a massive help to our organisation. This money will go directly into feeding and caring for the animals that we have rescued and are in our care. We currently have 14 sea turtles, one seabird and one sea snake in our care. With this kind of support we can give the best possible care to these animals so they can be released back into the wild.

On behalf of Tweed Palliative Support and Wedgetail Retreat, we are delighted with our win!  The fact that this was a community vote makes is very special to us and we are so grateful for their support. We commend Southern Cross Credit Union for their initiative in putting on this program to assist local charities.  The $5000 Community Goals prize will greatly enable us to continue our service to the people of Tweed Shire via TPS and to maintain our world-class end-of-life care at Wedgetail Retreat. Thank you SCCU and our community!

As COVID hit some 3 years ago, I approached SCCU to re-align our financial position at both a personal and professional level with our business. Not only were your team receptive but with the assistance of SCCU not only did we make our way through COVID closures, but due to the support of SCCU we have evolved into an extremely sound business, and I would suggest a success story of the community banking that SCCU continues to deliver.Thank you for the support you offer to us as a local business and us as a local family of the area. Thank you, the entire team, at SCCU for being such an awesome part of the community whilst also being a great business to align with.

Working with Steve has been an absolute pleasure! He is very professional yet is able to bring a personal touch to the banking and loan process. We always feel like we are kept up to date with requirements and processes and Steve is always willing to explain everything in a user-friendly yet professional manner. He has been amazing to work with for our financial needs and would highly recommend his services to friends, family, and colleagues.

We are writing to compliment SCCU for the excellent care, efficiency and exceptional customer service which we have received over the past many months of our build from Emma Northcott. Emma has combined professionalism, attention to details, accuracy, excellent communication and helpful consideration in managing our loan and the periodic payments requested by the builder. In our opinion she has gone above and beyond what we would have expected from a Lending Operations Specialist, and her handling of our account will highly contribute to our recommendations of SCCU to friends and family. Thanking you sincerely
