What financial difficulty can look like

Financial hardship doesn’t always look the same for everyone. It can be sudden or gradual, short-term or ongoing, and it can happen to anyone.

You might be:

  • Struggling to pay regular bills like rent, mortgage, credit card or utilities.
  • Using one form of credit to pay off another.
  • Avoiding opening bills or checking bank accounts due to stress.
  • Making sacrifices, like skipping meals or delaying medical care.

These experiences are more common than people realise. In fact, nearly 1 in 2 Australians with debt struggle to meet their repayments according to ASIC, with many feeling isolated in their experience and unsure about where to turn.

Financial difficulty doesn’t mean failure, it means you may need support. Whether your situation is temporary or more complex, our team is ready to listen without judgment and work with you to find a way forward.

Common Causes of Debt Today

Life is unpredictable, and financial difficulty often follows unexpected events. These are some of the most common reasons we see:

  • Cost of living pressures: Rising prices for essentials like food, housing, and fuel can quickly outpace income.
  • Reduced income or job loss: A change in work hours or employment can make it hard to stay on top of commitments.
  • Unexpected expenses: Things like car repairs, medical bills, or family emergencies can throw a budget off balance.
  • Credit overuse: It’s easy to rely on credit cards or buy-now-pay-later services when cash flow is tight, which can build up quickly.
  • Health issues: Physical or mental health challenges can impact both earning capacity and expenses.
  • Life transitions: Separation, moving house, or starting a family can bring financial strain, even when planned.

You might relate to one of these causes, or perhaps it’s a mix. Whatever your situation, it’s valid, and there is a path forward.

How we can help you

We offer a range of tailored solutions to support you through financial difficulty. Potential assistance may involve:

  • Deferring scheduled loan repayments for a period of time.
  • Making reduced payments for a period of time.
  • Making interest only payments for a period of time.
  • Debt consolidation to simplify repayments.
  • Restructuring existing loans without charging the usual establishment fees.
  • Waiving fees and charges, including break costs if you need early access to term deposits.

If any of these solutions could help, please reach out. Our team is ready to discuss your options and guide you through the process.

Financial Assistance FAQs

  • Am I eligible to apply for assistance for financial difficulty?

All our customers experiencing financial hardship are eligible to apply for assistance. We ask that you don’t wait if you know your financial situation is about to change, even if your loan repayments are currently up to date or in advance.

  • How do I apply for financial difficulty? Does it have to be in writing?

Applying for financial difficulty is easy and applications don’t need to be in writing. You can simply call us on 1300 360 744 to discuss your circumstances. However, if you do prefer another form of contact you can either email hardship@sccu.com.au or submit a form on the ‘How can I ask for help’ section at the top of the page, and one of our team members will guide you.

  • When should I contact SCCU if I’m having trouble with repayments?

We recommend you reach out to us as soon as you’re aware of possible hardship, even before missed payments occur. This will give us the best chance to help you manage the situation. The sooner we understand what you need and map out a way forward, the more possibilities there are to avoiding further difficulties.

  • What types of assistance might I be offered?

Depending on your situation, we may be able to offer:

    • Deferring scheduled loan repayments for a period of time.
    • Making reduced payments for a period of time.
    • Making interest only payments for a period of time.
    • Waiving fees and charges, including break costs if you need early access to term deposits.
    • Debt consolidation to simplify repayments.

Each case is individually assessed by our dedicated Financial Assistance and Hardship Team, where a plan will be created to match your particular circumstances and needs.

  • What might cause temporary financial hardship?

Life changes and unexpected events can suddenly impact your financial commitments, like receiving multiple bills at once, injury or illness, job loss, or a relationship breakdown are common reasons people fall behind – even if they have previously managed repayments. Sometimes a single event can cause financial hardship, and sometimes it happens gradually as a result of smaller changes.

  • Can I talk to someone in person about hardship support?

Absolutely. We find it best for customers to speak to a dedicated team member during this process, allowing for continue support and comprehensive understanding of each context. If you would like to speak in person, we would suggest booking an appointment with our Financial Assistance and Hardships Team first to ensure you have a personalised experience.

Request your appointment by calling us on 1300 360 744 or by sending an email to hardship@sccu.com.au and we will get back to you.

  • Is there independent financial help available?

Yes, you can access free independent financial counselling through trusted non-for-profit Debt Helpline organisations listed by MoneySmart.

Shane provided amazing customer service from start to finish. He was extremely knowledgeable, respectful, and attended to every detail of the process with thoroughness and professionalism. This kind of customer service is almost unheard of these days, so it was an absolute delight to work with Shane. The interest rate on my company car was fantastic and the terms of the loan were both fair and reasonable. I 100% recommend Shane and Southern Cross Credit Union for obtaining financing for a vehicle and wouldn't use anyone else for my business going forward. Thanks to Shane and his team!

Previously we were not advocates of the banking industry, we were strong non-believers after some disappointing & negative experiences. Many locals referred us to Southern Cross Credit Union (SCCU) and after much encouragement we moved our banking business to the SCCU Tweed City Branch. We are now strong believers as we have been in the extremely efficient, effective and supportive hands of SCCU loans manager Stephen Distant. What an asset! Stephen has totally reframed our banking experience, we are genuinely impressed with his ability to do this by managing our loans. Even after many years as a SCCU client, Stephen's dedication with helping us has not died down, his loyalty remains nothing short of inspiring and his willingness to provide outstanding customer service is something we are in awe of. Moving our accounts to SCCU was a great decision, thanks to Stephen Distant.

As COVID hit some 3 years ago, I approached SCCU to re-align our financial position at both a personal and professional level with our business. Not only were your team receptive but with the assistance of SCCU not only did we make our way through COVID closures, but due to the support of SCCU we have evolved into an extremely sound business, and I would suggest a success story of the community banking that SCCU continues to deliver.Thank you for the support you offer to us as a local business and us as a local family of the area. Thank you, the entire team, at SCCU for being such an awesome part of the community whilst also being a great business to align with.
