years of SCCU showcase

From humble beginnings, this is our story.

  • NSW Community

    A Community Solution Takes Shape

Initially called Tweed Banana Growers’ Federation Credit Union Limited, our Credit Union was created as part of a national boom along with 62 others community-led organisations as an alternative to banks. This rise aligned with the early stages of financial deregulation in the mid1960s.

  • SCCU Team in the s

    Operations in the Early Days

From the perspective of one our valuable team members still at the Credit Union today, Lyn Mclean, banking looked very different in the 70s with everything captured in paper and a very hands-on nature of the service. Joan Fleming, a former SCCU employee and loyal customer, recalls: “We had to have three signatories to cash cheques, and two had to be Directors’ signatures. I had to walk up to the Murwillumbah Ambulance Station and get Graham Carlill to sign some cheques, and then I had to get Stan Stoddart’s signature, who worked in a shed near where the swimming pool is today.” In 1975, the Credit Union was renamed Tweed-Byron Credit Union, and in 1976 it merged with Lismore Community Credit Union.

  • Tweed Byron CU

    Banking Industry shifts

On the back of the Campbell Committee report in 1981, Australia’s financial system shifted from a tightly controlled, regulated environment to a competitive, market-driven system through the floating of the dollar, entry of foreign banks, and deregulation of interest rates. These reforms helped improve efficiency and product innovation while also increasing exposure to market volatility and risk.

  • Credit Union Tools s

    New Tools Enter the Workplace

In the early 80’s, most Credit Unions as well as ours had moved away from paper and fully manual operations with computers starting to appear behind the counter. By mid-80s, broader and more integrative systems were in place to support our Credit Union expansion with the opening of Financial Service Centre’s in Tweed Heads, Casino, Mullumbimby, Ballina and Byron. Our teams adapted quickly while continuing to serve people with the same level of care, most long-term customers.

  • SCCU Rebrand 1997

    The SCCU Brand is Established

By the 90’s, ATMs and phone banking services became part of regular life promoting customer convenience and allowing for bank transactions outside business hours. As the banking industry expanded, so did our Credit Union. In 1997, the Southern Cross Credit Union brand was established to reflect its broader reach with a solid presence in the Northern Rivers.

  • SCCU Growth through GFC

    SCCU's Growth Through GFC

Following the Big 4 dominance established in the late 90s and Global Financial Crisis in the early 2000s, Credit Unions begin expanding their product offerings to compete for the remaining market share. Despite the industry challenges and new regulations in place, SCCU continued to operate with the same steady presence in the communities we served, and reinforced a strong market presence registering continue member base increase and assets growth.

  • SCCU Tweed FSC

    Online Services Uplift

Although online channels were established in the early 2000s, SCCU’s digital banking uplift happened in 2016 with a new website and mobile app delivered, and continue to this day with new solutions being implemented year-on-year to provide convenience and improve online customer experience. On the same year, our Community Grants program was launched and a TV campaign was released in celebrations of SCCU’s 50 years.

  • SCCU Community Clean Up

    People At The Centre

SCCU’s promise to contribute to the community remained steady despite new market regulations, global financial crisis and technology embedding. Throughout the years, we provided Community Grants and sponsored Community Partners programs with over $100,000 going back to grass root initiatives. That same Credit Union ethos applied when supporting customers through Covid and inflationary changes by holding interest rates, reducing margins, and having a dedicated department established to guide those in hardship.

  • SCCU Digital transformation

    Banking That Evolves With You

Mobile apps, real-time payments, and digital access became part of daily life. Customers now manage their finances in seconds, across devices and locations. The popularisation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) marks one of the fastest technology adoptions in history, and while it facilitates faster processes and services, it also increases customer exposure to risk. That’s why this year, as we celebrate our 60th anniversary, our focus remains on protecting you.
