Cheque Services FAQs

  • Why are cheque services being phased out?

Cheque usage has declined significantly over recent years as more Australians have adopted digital and real-time payment methods. As part of the Australian Government’s Cheques Transition Plan, the financial services industry is working together to gradually wind down the cheques system and support customers in moving to alternative payment options.

  • When will cheque services end at Southern Cross Credit Union?

Southern Cross Credit Union will progressively remove cheque services over a staged transition period. Key dates include the discontinuation of new cheque books, the end of cheque writing services, and the eventual closure of cheque deposits. Please refer to the timeline above for the specific dates that apply to your account.

  • What can I use instead of cheques?

There are several secure and convenient alternatives to cheques, including:

    • Pay Anyone transfers using a BSB and account number
    • PayID and Osko® for fast, real-time payments
    • BPAY® for paying bills
    • Direct Debit arrangements for recurring payments
    • Visa Debit Card payments online, over the phone and in-store

Our team can help you choose the option that best suits your needs. Learn more on our Bank Your Way page.

  • Can I still use my existing cheque book?

Yes, you can continue using your existing cheque book. However, you should transition to alternative payment methods as soon as possible as no cheque books will be issued after 1st of September 2026 and any cheques you write, including if personal or business, will be dishonoured if the receiving part deposit it after the 1st of March 2027. If you have issued a SCCU Personal/Business Cheque to a person and that person has not deposited that cheque prior to 1 March 2027, then the cheque will be dishonoured. We recommend that you advise any persons that you have provided an SCCU Personal/Business Cheque to deposit the cheque prior to 1 March 2027.

  • I have a large amount of money to transfer. How can I do this securely?

There are multiple ways you can send money electronically. Refer to our alternative payment options listed above in this page and explore our Bank Your Way page for more alternatives.

  • What should I do with any cheques remaining in my cheque book?

You can safely dispose of any unused cheques by cutting them up or return your cheque book to your closest SCCU Financial Service Centre.

As COVID hit some 3 years ago, I approached SCCU to re-align our financial position at both a personal and professional level with our business. Not only were your team receptive but with the assistance of SCCU not only did we make our way through COVID closures, but due to the support of SCCU we have evolved into an extremely sound business, and I would suggest a success story of the community banking that SCCU continues to deliver. Thank you for the support you offer to us as a local business and us as a local family of the area. Thank you, the entire team, at SCCU for being such an awesome part of the community whilst also being a great business to align with.

We are writing to compliment SCCU for the excellent care, efficiency and exceptional customer service which we have received over the past many months of our build from Emma Northcott. Emma has combined professionalism, attention to details, accuracy, excellent communication and helpful consideration in managing our loan and the periodic payments requested by the builder. In our opinion she has gone above and beyond what we would have expected from a Lending Operations Specialist, and her handling of our account will highly contribute to our recommendations of SCCU to friends and family. Thanking you sincerely
